    1. Race to The End of the Earth - Feature Presentation

      May 16th, 2013
      7:30-9pm

      Join Dr Ross MacPhee, curator of Race to The End of the Earth, American Museum of Natural History, as he recounts a gripping tale of Antarctic adventure and tragedy. Just 100 years ago, two teams—one British, the other Norwegian—set out to claim the South Pole, Earth’s last great geographical prize, but only one team returned.

      Dr MacPhee will sign copies of his book, Race to The End (Sterling, 2010), at the conclusion of his lecture. Exhibition preview follows the presentation

    2. Hands-on in the Exhibition

      Daily
      11am - 4pm

      The fantastic crew of docents from the Royal BC Museum will provide extra hands-on-learning opportunities exploring the themes presented within the exhibition. Look for the docents everyday.

    3. Night at the Museum

      May 31, 2013
      6:30 PM - 9:00 AM, orientation begins at 7:00 PM 

      Reach for the end of the earth on an overnight adventure to Antarctica! After everyone has gone home and we've closed the doors for the night, we invite families to join un in the Race to the End of the Earth exhibition for games, flashlight tours and an expedition. In the morning, enjoy a pancake breakfast before you begin the trek back home.

      Capacity: Limited to 100 participants. Youth must be accompanied by an adult.
      Please limit the number of adults to a maximum of two per family.
      Suggested age range for youth 6-16 years.

      Members: $67.50 per person. Remember to sign in.
      General Public: $75.00 

    4. Quest Lecture: Hayley Shephard

      July 18, 2013

      Hayley Shephard, Wilderness Guide, Author of South Solo: Kayaking to Save the Albatross (June 2012)

      In 2010, Shephard was the first person to attempt a solo sea kayak journey around South Georgia Island, a Sub-Antarctic Island. Documented in her movie Soul of the Sea her journey also served to raise awareness of the plight of the Albatross.

    5. Quest Lecture: Pat Morrow

      July 4, 2013
      7:30pm to 9pm

      Pat Morrow, Photographer and Mountain Climber

      On his way to becoming the first to climb the highest peak on all seven continents, Morrow co-founded the logistics company Adventure Network in order to get himself and subsequent adventures to Antarctica’s highest peak, Mt Vinson Massif.

    6. Summer Camp - RBCM Base Camp

      July 8 – 12

      August 12 – 16
      August 19 - 23

      9 am – 4 pm, Monday to Friday

      Budding adventurers will discover their inner explorer in these week long summer camp at the Royal BC Museum. In addition to learning about Race to the End of the Earth’s Scott and Amundsen’s famous expeditions, participants will also learn about modern science taking place at the pole. Campers will spend lots of time in our feature exhibition as well as getting outdoors. Secure your spot early, last year’s camps sold out. Lunch and snacks not provided.

    7. Quest Lecture: Gareth Wood

      August 1, 2013
      7:30pm to 9pm

      Gareth Wood, author (with Eric Jamieson) South Pole: 900 Miles on Foot 

      Wood lived two years in a small hut in Antarctica.  During that time, he and two Britons trekked 900 miles on foot to the South Pole, becoming the first in history to accomplish such a journey without support such as dog sleds or radio communications. The team was personally awarded Polar Medals by Queen Elizabeth the II.

    8. Wonder Sunday: Polar Adventure

      August 25, 2013
      1-3pm

      Did you ever wonder if you were the adventurous type? Come on an imaginary Antarctic journey, and discover your inner explorer. The penguins await.  Wonder Sunday is an interactive, learning-based special event that happens on the last Sunday of every month.

    9. Quest: Adrian Raeside

      September 5, 2013
      7:30pm to 9pm

      Adrian Raeside, author Return to Antarctica – September 2013

      Related to three members of the Scott Expedition, Raeside traveled to Antarctica in 2008-09 to retrace his grandfather, Sir Charles Wright’s footsteps.

    10. Quest Lecture: Jana Stefan

      October 3, 2013
      7:30pm to 9pm

      Jana Stefan, Conservator and Royal BC Museum Exhibit Arts Technician – October 2013

      Stefan has lived and worked in Antarctica for two seasons, enduring extreme living conditions in order to preserve the world’s most remote historic site, R.F. Scott’s Expedition Hut.
