Gareth Wood, author (with Eric Jamieson) South Pole: 900 Miles on Foot 

Wood lived two years in a small hut in Antarctica.  During that time, he and two Britons trekked 900 miles on foot to the South Pole, becoming the first in history to accomplish such a journey without support such as dog sleds or radio communications. The team was personally awarded Polar Medals by Queen Elizabeth the II.
